VISIONQUEST: March 13, 1999

WHERE CAN 18,000 EMPLOYEES TAKE A COMPANY? WHEREVER OUR CUSTOMERS WANT IT TO GO. OVER THE PAST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE LED US TO SOME PRETTY AMAZING PLACES. IT’S TAKEN A UNIFIED GROUP OF EMPLOYEES — ALL LISTENING TO CUSTOMERS AND PULLING IN THE SAME DIRECTION — TO GET US WHERE WE ARE TODAY.

Schwab unity was celebrated in March 1999 at an extraordinary event called VisionQuest, in which employees in 10 locations around the world came together via satellite. The purpose of the event was to reinforce the firm’s mission as it was originally conceived by Chuck Schwab 25 years ago: to be the most useful and ethical financial services firm in the world. Everyone participated. We talked about how unique our Company is in the way we care about people and show compassion on the job. We reaffirmed our commitment to help people from all walks of life become financially secure. We realized the qualities that have made us successful so far and identified the strengths we’ll need in the future. Perhaps most important, each of us saw where our jobs fit within the larger context of the Company’s mission and came to understand the reasons behind our strategic direction. All of this gave us a better understanding of not just what we do but why we do it.

During this one moment in time, the past and future converged into a crystal-clear picture of what our Company stands for and where we are going. The customer is in the center. Financial freedom is the goal.

Schwab makes it happen.
