Colleen: [Showing old photos] This was the day I got married, and this was my mom and dad. The wedding was the best day of my life till my kids were born. Becoming a mom was scary. A lot of unknown. I got divorced when they were ages seven and five, and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I was working full-time. And being a single parent definitely impacted the path that my career took.

Music switches to more upbeat guitar music. Colleen is at her workplace.

When I got into this business thirty years ago, it really was to help people with their financial success. And I have a passion for working with women in transition. I definitely took that on as a personal mission because I could see the value based on what I had gone through.

Colleen on the phone: “So if you’re okay with that, let me know…”

I deal with women of a lot of different ages shifting their focus to be more involved in their financial matters. They are concerned and looking for somebody to listen to them. I break things down in a way that allows them to see that they can do this on their own.

Colleen shakes a client’s hand: “Thanks for coming in, Michelle, so good to see you…”

I think I look at my transition the way a lot of women may look at theirs. I think I was a strong, capable person when I decided to get married. I think I was a strong, capable person when I got divorced. And I think that most people know they’ll get through it, but they need people around them to help them.

When you partner with a financial consultant at Schwab, you get somebody that helps keep you on your path. And when a woman in transition comes through to the other side and understands what’s going on in her financial situation, that’s empowering to me. That motivates me to continue to want to do the work that I do.
