Chrystian Simmons named a Schwab Scholar in Financial Planning

“Financial planning is a long game, but many people are nearsighted with their finances,” says Chrystian Simmons, a Temple University senior and recipient of one of the first Charles Schwab Foundation Scholars in Financial Planning scholarships, part of a $3.5 million endowed scholarship program providing financial assistance and career opportunities to students from underrepresented communities. “I’m pursuing a career in financial planning because I want to have a positive impact on people’s lives, helping them make the best decisions possible toward achieving their dreams and financial goals,” he continued.

As a Charles Schwab Foundation Scholar, Simmons received approximately $10,000 this year in scholarship funds. The program also makes voluntary mentorship and professional development opportunities available to him to help prepare him for a successful career in financial services, including a guaranteed interview for the firm’s Financial Consultant Academy, a FINRA SIE voucher, resume review, and interview prep. Simmons reports he was in a state of disbelief when he learned he received the award, and commented on the importance of achieving more diversity in the field of financial planning.

“People of color are underrepresented in financial planning just as they are in many other industries. It’s really easy to think a profession isn’t open to you when you don’t see people who look like you in it. As a financial planner, I hope people in the Black community will see me and think ‘If he can do that, I can, too.’  The road getting there might be a little more difficult, but it’s open for travel.”

The Scholars in Financial Planning endowment is one of several scholarship programs funded through Charles Schwab Foundation to develop and attract diverse talent by recruiting from underrepresented communities, including women, people of color, people with disabilities, and people with military backgrounds. It is one of the Board-approved diversity and inclusion efforts announced by the Schwab Executive Council last year. More information about Schwab’s commitment to diversity is available on the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion website
