- Passionate about helping people

"I think I realized this was my 'calling' when I was a kid," says Blake Nelson. "My dad is a CPA and I always thought it was interesting that he knew every client walking through his door. He knew their story, their family, and I wanted to do that kind of work, too. I realized I wanted a career in financial services because I can make a real, positive impact on people's lives."
Blake grew up in Colorado and is a recent graduate of Colorado State University and a new member of the 2017 Financial Consultant (FC) Academy based in Westlake, Texas, a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Westlake area is a growth area for Schwab, and ground breaking on a new campus took place in September of this year.
At the first of June, Blake and 11 others began the nearly two-year journey to become Financial Consultants at Charles Schwab. The Schwab FC Academy is a developmental rotational program that prepares people for a career as a financial consultant at a branch.
So far, Blake says the learning is fast and furious, but he has no complaints. "This is my first job out of college and I'm learning a lot about how Schwab sees things 'through client's eyes,' and about building those relationships like what I saw my dad create over the years." And he's getting that experience learning Schwab's service basics and taking client calls with the support of Schwab's top-notch trainers.
Blake has found his cohort to already be forming a tight-knit group, creating friendships and study groups for the Series 7, an industry license to become a broker-dealer. "I'm a new grad and that's a big transition. But what I'm finding is that I can really be myself here and that it's possible to really enjoy your work—be serious and be fun at the same time. The Schwab experience has exceeded my expectations."
And as a fresh college graduate, Blake is learning how to juggle priorities, meet expectations, and multi-task. "I'm finding my niche. I'm learning to prioritize and figure out what to focus on. Mostly, I'm excited about the next year and a half and what the future holds for all twelve us in the FC Academy here in Westlake."
And what has impressed Blake so far about working for the company? "I want people to know that Schwab truly invests in their employees both as people and as workers. Schwab focuses on the seeing things through clients' eyes, but they see things through employees' eyes, too."
In his spare time, Blake enjoys outdoor activities and anything sports-related. He also enjoys reading about finance, the economy, and politics.
