SIFMA Stock Market Game & Capitol Hill Challenge, February 5 – May  11, 2018

The need for financial education is real.

  • Nearly two-thirds of Americans can’t pass a basic financial literacy test.1

  • Only 17 states require students to take a course in financial education.2

We need a strong commitment to fixing the problem and community-wide efforts. This is why Schwab is so excited to be partnering with the SIFMA Foundation to bring the Stock Market Game and Capitol Hill Challenge to classrooms across the nation. The Capitol Hill Challenge is a national 14-week financial education competition that pairs individual members of Congress and financial capability programming with public schools in every congressional district nationwide to teach middle and high school students about saving, investing, and government. As part of the Challenge, students participate in the Stock Market Game, an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages them in the world of economics, investing, and personal finance. Each year, the program reaches approximately 15,000 students, 750 teachers and 740 public schools.

Participants are given a hypothetical $100,000 and taught how to invest it for growth. In the process, they gain a fundamental understanding of investing and how to make their money work for them. The SMG not only engages students but improves academic performance, financial knowledge, and saving and investing habits.

“It’s a pretend game but when you play it long enough, it doesn’t feel pretend anymore. It feels like it’s your money and you’re investing it.”

- Brenda, 9th Grade, Pittman High School, Turlock CA

The CHC connects all that students
learned in the Stock Market Game
to the world of government. Members
of Congress visit their matched CHC schools, offering students, educators, and the school community a unique opportunity to discuss current issues, the economy, and the importance of financial education. The CHC reaches all 50 U.S. states and, for the past four years, every US Senator and Representative has participated in this acclaimed SIFMA Foundation program.

The top 10 SMG teams visit Washington, D.C. and see the role that government officials play in fiscal policy making and the economy and how it functions. It helps them grasp how our world is interconnected.

“I’m really looking forward to talking to the lawmakers on Capitol Hill. That’s an opportunity not many students come across.”

- Shaquille Ziam, former CHC participant, Carmel High School, IN

Financial Literacy - It Matters. Today, Forever

Lisa Kidd Hunt, Charles Schwab Executive Vice President and Chair of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) emphasizes how having a financial education is key for a better life.

“One thing is for certain – the Capitol Hill Challenge has drastically altered my perspective on the economy, financial literacy, and even on what I can achieve as I move forward in life.”
