The passion behind the service
We’re shining a spotlight on Schwab's Community Ambassadors—the lead coordinators of local volunteer activities in the community.
By Chelsey Sleator, Senior Manager, Communications
Schwab’s Community Ambassadors are integral to making local volunteer opportunities happen for employees across the country.
We spoke to David Gudal, a long-time Community Ambassador for Indianapolis, and Bryce Butt, a new Community Ambassador for Omaha, to get both perspectives on what it’s like to coordinate volunteer activities (such as Schwab’s Volunteer Week) and learn why they participate.
Why did you decide to become involved as an ambassador?
David: My purpose in life is to help improve, and positively impact, the lives of others. When I first learned about Schwab’s Community Ambassador Group many years ago, I knew that I wanted to become involved and find ways to help others and my community. It has been very personally rewarding and fulfilling.
Bryce: I have been an active volunteer in the Omaha area since I joined the firm back in 2013. I have a passion for helping kids in need, and specifically for working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that loves philanthropy and volunteering time, so my goal has always been to give back as much as I possibly can to the community that I grew up in and love so dearly.
What are you looking forward to about this year’s Schwab Volunteer Week (SVW)?
David: I’m most excited about the opportunity to volunteer in-person alongside Schwabbies for the first time in several years. I’m excited about seeing many new-to-firm Schwab employees have the chance to volunteer for the first time at Schwab as well.
Bryce: I’m looking forward to being able to focus my time and energy on the great non-profits in the Omaha area. I am looking forward to seeing the number of lives our firm impacts and I’m looking forward to leading several projects with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands. This is an experience that I know I will look forward to for many years to come.
David, you’ve participated in many SVW projects over the years. Any favorite memories?
David: I had a rewarding experience volunteering at a Boys and Girls Club leading a financial literacy event. The participants were so much fun and shared that they had learned so much about making great choices and better managing their finances.
Also, when volunteering for Habitat for Humanity I was able to meet the mother and children whose house I was helping to build. The family was incredibly appreciative. They had previously experienced homelessness and shared how this house would forever change their lives for the better.
These memories stick with me to this day.
