Schwabbies unite for a dedicated month of virtual community service

Schwab kicks off its first ever Schwab Volunteer Month with 300 organized community service projects and 6,000 employee volunteers.

What’s become clear over the last year is that even a pandemic can’t weaken the spirit of volunteerism at Schwab. The desire to serve is so deeply ingrained in our company culture that we keep finding new ways to serve our communities – even within the bounds of social distancing. Today the company kicked off its first ever Schwab Volunteer Month (SVM) with 300 organized community service projects and 6,000 employee volunteers! This replaces the company’s long-standing Schwab Volunteer Week with some important differences: all volunteer opportunities will be virtual, which means employees can choose the project that feels most meaningful to them regardless of where it’s located, and lengthening the program means more flexibility for engaging our employees and the 130 nonprofit partners they will serve across the country.

Projects average one to two hours in length and cover needs ranging from:

  • Financial literacy for underrepresented students, and
  • Letter writing and wellness calls to seniors, to
  • Storybook projects with young children, and
  • Professional mentoring.

What’s really exciting for us is that legacy Schwab and legacy TD Ameritrade employees will volunteer ‘side-by-side’ for the first time on these types of projects, and some will be hosted in Omaha, former headquarters of TD Ameritrade. It’s another way our combined firm is united in service.

One employee volunteer shared her enthusiasm, saying “As a new Schwabbie, I am astounded by the opportunities Schwab offers for employees to give back. All of the support the firm has given to individuals and nonprofits throughout the pandemic speaks to its corporate compassion. I feel very fortunate to work at an organization that has heart.”

As part of SVM, we’re launching a new national partnership with Sky’s the Limit, an organization that connects underserved young entrepreneurs with experienced business advisors and mentors for one-on-one support and resources with the goal of helping them build their businesses. This partnership is in the tradition of Schwab’s Pro Bono Challenge, which operates annually as a skills-based consulting event that enables Schwab employees to focus their time, talents, and expertise to help local nonprofit organizations expand their impact in our communities. Through the Sky’s the Limit partnership, Schwab volunteers leverage an online platform to pair up with young entrepreneurs for consulting expertise ranging from marketing and human resources to technology and financial management. Events kick off during SVM with an ‘Impact Day’ scheduled for May 28th when entrepreneurs and volunteers will meet for their first of ongoing, self-paced consulting sessions, but that’s just a start. Over the course of the year, at least 100 employee volunteers will help these young entrepreneurs become the job creators they envision.
